DESCRIZIONE:
La chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo a Onanì, nel cuore della Sardegna, rappresenta un esempio dell’intimo rapporto tra l’architettura romanica e il paesaggio rurale della Barbagia.
Costruita in granito lavorato nel XII secolo, ha delle affinità con edifici simili sull’isola d’Elba e in Corsica.
La pianta è a navata singola con un’abside a sud-est, caratterizzata da una monofora al centro e una apertura cruciforme.
La facciata ospita un portale con arco di scarico rialzato e un architrave in scisto, mentre gli spioventi convergono verso un grande campanile a vela.
La copertura esterna è in lastre di scisto.
NARRAZIONE:We have often noted the close relationship between many of the island’s Romanesque buildings and the rural landscape.
This is no coincidence: this relationship expresses the need of the time to put places dedicated to work in the countryside under divine protection, as well as to offer precious points of reference and support to medieval travellers.
The church of San Pietro Apostolo di Onanì, right in the heart of Sardinia, is right in the group of these buildings characterised by a radical relationship with the natural landscape.
We have no documentary evidence of the construction of the church, made of granite worked in small ashlars, but we can date its construction to the 12th century.
There is a strong affinity with similar small churches on the islands of Elba and Corsica, also made of granite.
The plan of the building has a single nave, with a south-eastern apse, with a single-light window in the centre surmounted by a cruciform opening, similar to the one on the façade, where we find the portal with a raised archway and a schist architrave.
The slopes converge towards a large bell gable.
The external roof, made of schist slabs, is noteworthy.
We conclude our visit by taking a last admiring look at the church of San Pedro Apóstol and the splendid Barbàgia landscape that surrounds it.
